German Shorthaired Pointers are of medium size. They are used mostly in hunting. And, they make good companion dogs for the whole family. The appearance is typical of a hunting dog. The skull and the muzzle have the same length. The back is short. Yet, the dog stands pretty high over the ground. The eyes that are usually brown are of almond shape. The color of the nose matches the color of the eyes. The ears are set high. The tail is usually docked by 60%.
German Shorthaired Pointer dogs have a short coat. The color of the coat ranges from solid liver to roan. The dog may have white markings. Red, black, and tan markings disqualify a dog from a show ring.
Height: Males are about 23-25 inches. Females are smaller. They usually stand about 21-23 inches at the shoulder.
Weight: German Shorthaired Pointer dogs weigh usually 45-70 pounds. Females are smaller.

The German Shorthaired Pointer dog is very people oriented. It does not do well without communication and play with its owners. The breed is a family companion rather than a one-man dog. German Shorthaired Pointer dogs are very agile. They need a considerable amount of exercise. A dog will be happiest if exercised twice a day. Apartment living does not seem to be satisfactory for this breed. The dogs are best with a yard.
The German Shorthaired Pointer dog is good with children. These dogs will not welcome any other stranger. Mostly likely, they will appear reserved. The German Shorthaired Pointer dog enjoys being the only favorite in the family. It does not do well with other pets, unless when raised with them from an early age. It should be kept in mind that the breed has strong hunting instincts. Males tend to be dominant. However, male German Shorthaired Pointers often make better hunters in the field.
