German Shorthaired Pointers - Origin

German Shorthaired Pointers were developed in Germany for various purposes. The ancestors of the German Shorthaired Pointer were known as early as in the 17th century. Despite the fact that the breed was a good help during a hunt, it was not as popular as the breed we know today. The reason was a variety of other hunting breeds.

Why did breeders aim at breeding a multi-purpose dog? The answer is obvious. At that time, there were many hunting breeds that were indispensable in one activity only. Thus, a dog was used either to find, mark, or retrieve game. Hence, breeders decided to produce a super hunting dog that could perform all these functions.

They perfected the qualities of the ancestor of the modern German Shorthaired Pointer dog by breeding it with Spanish and English Pointers. The end result appeared to be a good retriever, pointer, and scent dog. By the end of the 19th century, the German Shorthaired Pointer dog became popular in Germany and other European countries.

German Shorthaired Pointers - Appearance In the United States

German Shorthaired Pointer dogs appeared in the United States in the 1880s. The breed received official AKC recognition in 1930. A Minnesota German Shorthaired Pointer Club received parent status. Years later, there was established a separate organization, the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America. Since 1962, this club has been taking care of the welfare of German Shorthaired Pointers.
